How to make DIY Soy Wax Candles

How to make DIY soy wax candles using mason jars, essential oils, and about 20 minutes of your time. The smart way to DIY for girls nights, gifts and crafts. Whether it is the holiday season or all year long we have those people in our lives who give us gifts, but we have forgotten about them, dangit!  During the upcoming holiday season, there are aromas everywhere.  Whether it is pumpkin spice, peppermint or cinnamon, we want to make our homes smell inviting and not like we just frantically cleaned the house.

How to make DIY Soy Wax Candles Using Mason Jars

What you need:

  • 2 cups of Soy Wax Flakes (makes one 8 oz candle)
  • Scented Candle Oil (we used vanilla)
  • Wax Coloring (Optional — we used a scented vanilla scented wax melt)
  • Microwave-safe dish (to melt the wax)
  • Low-Flame Candle Wicks
  • 1 – 8oz glass jar (we used a mason jar)
  • Glue (to adhere the wick to the base of the jar – we used all-purpose craft glue)
  • 1 – Chopstick, spoon or skewer (to hold the wick in place while pouring/cooling)

  1. Prep 8 oz. mason jar — use glue to adhere the base of the wick to the bottom of the jar.  Once glue sets, twist wick around chopstick (you can also use the handle of a spoon or a skewer) to keep the wick centered.

  • Put 2 cups of soy wax flakes and wax coloring into microwave-safe dish.  Helpful tip → try finding a container that has a molded pour spout because this will help when pouring the mixture into your containers.

    Add two cups of soy flakes into microwave safe container for DIY Candles in mason jars with The Hippie Hobby.

     

  • Put the microwave safe bowl in the microwave for 60 seconds at a time, stirring between each 60 second interval until melted. It took approximately 2:30-3 minutes for the wax to liquify. Be sure to use a hot pad when handling the bowl because it will be hot!

  • Once the mixture is melted, add in scented candle oil and stir with a metal spoon. Please note the melted candle oil will be hot. Try not to burn yourself. We used approximately 1 ½ tablespoons of essential oil.                   Hint → use more fragrance oil for a stronger scented candle.

  • Carefully pour melted oil mixture into 8 oz jar making sure to leave at least an inch of room between the wax and the top of the jar. Allow to set for at least 90 minutes.

    Add 1.5 tablespoons of essential oil to your DIY mason jar candle with The Hippie Hobby and stir hot contents with a metal spoon.

     

  • Once cooled, trim the wick down, decorate your mason jar and enjoy!
